{"id":483,"date":"2021-11-06T13:55:13","date_gmt":"2021-11-06T13:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krista.longeway.ca\/?p=483"},"modified":"2021-11-13T13:02:26","modified_gmt":"2021-11-13T13:02:26","slug":"long-road-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krista.longeway.ca\/?p=483","title":{"rendered":"Long Road Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/krista.longeway.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Ordinary-moments-e1636205642127-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/krista.longeway.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Ordinary-moments-e1636205642127-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/krista.longeway.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Ordinary-moments-e1636205642127-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/krista.longeway.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Ordinary-moments-e1636205642127-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">I was feeling homesick when I wrote this poem.\u00a0 It is a strange thing to say, considering I have lived away from my \u201chometown\u201d for more than 6 years now.\u00a0 But for me, when I think of the word \u201chome\u201d, it still means Didsbury \u2013 the small Alberta town that I grew up in.\u00a0 So, as I missed my old home, I imagined myself travelling all those miles from the coast of B.C. to the prairies of Alberta.\u00a0 It is a beautiful drive \u2013 well worth the trip even if you\u2019re not heading towards family.\u00a0 But it is just that much more beautiful to me as it takes me closer to a place that is full of memories and people who I care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Where is home for you? <\/strong><\/strong>What is it that makes a place a home anyway? Personally, I have found that \u201chome\u201d is not necessarily a place as much as it is the people who are there.\u00a0 But for those of you who are lucky enough to still have a connection to your childhood home, perhaps that is the place that you think of.\u00a0 For me, \u201chome\u201d is a complicated mixture of people and memories created over many years.\u00a0 Sometimes I wonder if the place I live in now will ever truly feel like home to me.\u00a0 Together, my husband and I have a big extended family who we have shared many happy moments with. We have friends that we\u2019ve known so long that they have become family. This poem was written with fond memories of them and the \u201chomes\u201d that we have shared.\u00a0 It is less about a specific house and more about the memories accumulated over time.\u00a0 For I have found that over time, all those things that were once familiar and ordinary have become so much more in my memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Long Road Home<\/strong>\r\nBy Krista Longeway\r\n\r\nA long ribbon of highway\r\nStretching from here to there.\r\nClimbing over snow topped mountains\r\nAnd through small villages \r\nClinging to the side of steep slopes,\r\nWinding through pine forests\r\nThat flow into the foothills \r\nAnd gradually level out\r\nUntil we\u2019re driving across the plains.\r\n\r\nPast field after field\r\nOf grains and pastures.\r\nA patchwork of colours\r\nSeparated by gravel roads \r\nAnd mismatched fences.\r\nThrough sunny clusters of poplars\r\nThat whisper in the wind.\r\nPast farms and dugouts\r\nWhere cattle lounge lazily in the sun.\r\nAnd beyond the creek \r\nWhere the crickets sing at night.\r\nJust a few more miles\r\nThen\u2026\r\nHome\r\n\r\nWith open arms I run to greet this place,\r\nFull to the brim with happy memories.\r\nWarm smells from the oven\r\nWaft through an open window,\r\nLacy curtains fluttering at the sill. \r\nPast a lush garden, tended with care,\r\nPast the apple tree, heavy with fruit ready to be picked.\r\nOrdinary moments from my everyday life\r\nTurned beautiful and extraordinary \r\nBy time and distance.\r\n\r\nHow many times have my feet walked this path,\r\nYet today it is new and marvelous.\r\nThis is what it means\r\nTo belong to a place,\r\nTo a home,\r\nTo a family.\r\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was feeling homesick when I wrote this poem.\u00a0 It is a strange thing to say, considering I have lived away from my \u201chometown\u201d for more than 6 years now.\u00a0 But for me, when I think of the word \u201chome\u201d, it still means Didsbury \u2013 the small Alberta town that I grew up in.\u00a0 So, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"off","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-483","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-friends-and-family","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.4 -
