Life is often thought of as a journey, the twists and turns of life unexpected and directed by fate.  Sometimes it seems as though we follow a path that has been set before us, with little control of the direction or the things we encounter along the way. Yet life is more complicated than that.  We make choices along the way.  We come to places where the path branches off and we must choose a direction for ourselves. Sometimes it seems like these detours lead to nowhere, or perhaps serve no positive purpose.  But we have the power to change our direction.  We have the power to take charge of our lives and make new choices.  We can choose to enjoy each twist and turn.  In doing so we often discover that what we thought were useless detours were actually our true path in life. 

There have been times in my life when I wondered if I was on the right path.  I have tried to see where my choices might lead me, but the twists and turns of fate seem unpredictable and out of my control.  Yet many times, when I look back I discover that each of the detours, each twist and turn, has led me towards something greater than I had anticipated.  My move to Victoria was like this.  There were many events that occurred and unexpected circumstances that influenced our decision to move away from our home and family and seek a new life in a new city.  But when I look back at all these roadblocks and detours, I can see the ways that they brought me ever closer to moving to this new place.  I can see that this is the path I was meant to follow and that the destination was good and right for my family.  Sometimes all these detours are not detours at all but are actually the path we were meant to follow all along.

 

The Path

There are times we meander through our life 
Without direction, as though in a dream
The fates directing our journey like a
Wandering path or a trickling stream
But when we look closer we discover
That life is more complex than it may seem

For despite every roadblock and detour 
Despite every wandering twist and turn
Despite all our struggles and our heartache
Though it all seemed by chance, we soon will learn 
That we were on the right path all along
Though its not always easy to discern

So it’s time to wake up from your dreaming
It’s time to fully take charge of your life
Make the most of your time here on this earth
Enjoy each moment, the joy and the strife
For each of these detours, each twist and turn
Were actually your true path in life
