In many ways, fall is a time of change. The green leaves of summer turn to crimson and gold as nature prepares for winter and the colder weather yet to come. As a teacher and mother, I find that with fall comes a new school year, new people, new circumstances and new expectations. Sometimes I resist these changes. I settle into the comfort of the familiar and I don’t want things to be different. Yet change is an inevitable part of life. As time passes, the sun rises and sets, people come and go, children grow, parents age, circumstances change, and our lives evolve into something new and different. Sometimes I need to be reminded that change can be beautiful and exciting. There is a world yet to explore and so much life yet to live. Although it is important to appreciate life as it is in the present moment, it is also necessary to look towards the future with hope for what tomorrow will bring. I wrote this poem to remind myself that there is much yet to look forward to. Change will come and with it will come many new and beautiful things.
Tomorrow’s Gifts
By Krista Longeway
There are stars you haven’t seen,
And places you haven’t been.
There is birdsong yet to hear,
And loves that you will hold dear.
There are dreams you haven’t dreamed,
And moonbeams that haven’t gleamed.
There is sunshine yet to glow,
And sweet flowers yet to grow.
There are words you’ve yet to say,
And music you’ve yet to play.
Waves that haven’t touched the shore,
There’s so much yet to explore.
There are winds that haven’t blown,
And people you haven’t known.
There are songs you’ve yet to sing.
What gifts will tomorrow bring?
