“Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.”
Genesis 2:1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. When He did this, he breathed life into all creation, putting in motion a rhythm that beats in tune with His own heart. The creation story itself has its own rhythm: a sort of call-and-response oscillation between God and creation: “God said let there be…and there was…and God saw that it was good.” The rhythm and repetition of these words and phrases emphasizes the rhythms of life that God puts into place as the foundation of all creation. We see this rhythm everywhere that we look in nature. It can be found in the rhythm of the waves on the shore, in the breath of the wind, in the movement of stars across the sky, even in our own heartbeats. We, as living creatures made by God, are a part of this rhythm from the moment of our birth until our very last breath.
The Rhythm of Creation
By Krista Longeway
Nature weaves a never-ending rhythm of sound and movement
It’s a gentle heartbeat of the earth that has been heaven-sent
The sea beats a rhythm flowing in and out forevermore
Waves are crashing, sometimes smashing on the rocks along the shore
Wind whispers a song dancing through the trees and across the sand
Wind is softly blowing, ever going to a different land
The moon and stars are silently moving across the night sky
The earth is turning while sun is burning in its place up high
Water evaporates from the land then falls to earth again
Raindrops forming sometimes storming as they fall from clouds and then
This water gathers here on the earth to form rivers and streams
Rivers always flowing never slowing to the sea it seems
As God’s creation, we live, we breathe, from the moment of our birth
Our own hearts beating, and repeating the rhythm of the earth
