As winter sets in and the nights grow longer, we turn towards the sources of light in our lives. We light fires in the fireplace, we put up holiday lights, we celebrate winter by shining light into the darkness. Light is used throughout the world as a symbol of hope when our days grow dark. As I think about the many ways that we can shine a light for others, I reflect on the gifts I have been given and the ways that I have the ability to touch the lives of those I encounter. I was drawn to my career as a special education teacher for exactly this reason. But truthfully, there are many days in which I feel I have more to offer the world. I have this hope that my blog is encouraging to someone out there. Maybe a friend or family member, or maybe a stranger who accidentally stumbles across it… it is my way of lighting a candle to provide a little light in the darkness.
Of course, there are many ways to help light the way for others. Sometimes a few encouraging words and a listening ear is all a person needs to help keep them going throughout the day. Other times a thoughtful gesture, a cup of coffee or a word of thanks is enough to brighten someone’s day. Still other times, people need to hear deeper words of faith and hope. What are the ways you have found to light the way for others? Whatever place you find yourself in, whatever your gifts, do what you can to shine your light. You may be surprised to discover along the way that the candle you have lit for someone else lights your way too.
Share Your Light
By Krista Longeway
Come light a candle in the darkest night
of someone else’s life.
Come walk in their footsteps and share your light.
Be there for them in their struggles and strife.
For it may surprise you to discover
somewhere along the way,
That by lighting the path for another,
It will help keep your own darkness at bay.
Short and direct. Nicely done
