Treasures

When I wrote this poem, I was reflecting on the many happy memories I have accumulated over the years.  I was thinking of my family and some of the wonderful moments we have spent together.  I was thinking about the ways that we collect memories and store them up in our hearts so that in times of difficulty we can bring these to mind.  Sometimes these happy memories can help to keep us going through the day when we are struggling with other things.

I envision these memories as a shell at the seashore – each one unique and beautiful.  I remember times of laughter and love, times of peace and contentment, times I have spent with my family on carefree days and times I have spent alone in moments of peaceful solitude.  Each memory is different and precious in its own way. Each memory represents a moment in time that has enriched my life and given my days meaning and a sense of purpose.  These are the moments that I cling to on my more difficult days.

Each Moment
By Krista Longeway

A single moment,
like a tiny shell.
A gentle spiral of white
encircling a smooth pink hollow
that whispers the sounds of the sea.
I pluck each shell from the water’s edge,
admire its beauty and uniqueness
and appreciate the gift.
Like a child collecting treasures in a bucket,
I collect moments
of joy and laughter,
of peace and contentment.
Each memory a treasure that I cling to
on the days when the sun doesn’t shine as brightly
or the nights when the moon is only a shadow.
I bring to mind the tiny shell
and smile.
