As a child, I was afraid of the dark. Whenever I visited friends in the evening and had to walk home in the dark, I imagined all sorts of things waiting to jump out at me from the bushes. As the years have passed, I have discovered that sometimes the paths of life can be much like that long walk home in the dark…life can be hard, it can be scary, and at times, we don’t know what lies around the corner. Although there are many good and beautiful things in my life, I have discovered that life isn’t a fairy tale in which we just grow up and live “happily ever after”. Rather, life is a series of ups and downs. We experience joy and laughter along with disappointment and sadness… and along the way we discover that living our lives with hope requires bravery and persistence. Even when we are walking through the darkest valleys, we can choose to hold onto hope that we will be okay and things will get better. We can choose to focus on the good things in our lives with gratitude for what they bring. Over time, we see that when we act with bravery, and when we hold onto hope, the sun does come out again. We find joy again and a new appreciation for the good things in life…sometimes it just takes time, and the bravery to take the next step even when we don’t yet know where the path will lead.
