“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God: and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6-7, NKJV)
I love the message of this verse: be anxious for nothing. This is something we all hope for… a time when we are free from our many worries and concerns. Yet it is hard not to worry about the future. It is hard not to think about all the things that could come to pass, whether good or bad, and hard not to want to control these things. But the Bible provides us with guidance on how to attain this lofty goal. In everything, we are told to come to God in prayer… we are told to let God know our requests with thanksgiving. I think this piece is important. We are to focus on what is good and beautiful in our lives and thank God for these blessings. This focus on gratitude reminds us that there are many good things in our lives and that God is always at work, finding ways to make things work together for our good. And when we pray these prayers with gratitude, God gives us a gift. It is the peace that surpasses understanding. Notice that this verse does not say that everything will turn out exactly the way that we have requested. It simply says that we will have peace. It does not say that we will understand God’s ways. It says that this peace will surpass our understanding. We will have peace even though we may not understand why things are happening or what will happen next. This peace, that surpasses our understanding, will guard our hearts and minds and protect us from worry. For me, I find that I only receive this peace when I lift up my hands to God and give my life over to him. I must make a conscious choice to put God in control of what will happen next. The peace that I receive is found in the knowledge that a good and loving God is in control and will guide the events of my life. I believe that it is only in giving our concerns over to God with gratitude for all that he has done, that we are given this peace of mind.
